Starting your driving journey in British Columbia is an investment in your future independence. However, between studying for the knowledge test and practicing your parallel parking, the administrative side—fees, booking windows, and renewal costs—can feel a bit overwhelming.

Whether you are a new resident moving to the North Shore or a local student ready to ditch the "L" for an "N," having a clear roadmap of the costs and processes involved is essential. At Actron Driving School, we want you to focus on the road, not the paperwork. Here is the up-to-date guide on everything you need to know about ICBC licensing for 2026.

Starting the Journey: The Knowledge Test

Before you can get behind the wheel, you have to pass the ICBC Knowledge Test. This is a 50-question multiple-choice exam that tests your understanding of the "Learn to Drive Smart" manual.

  • The Cost: Each attempt at the knowledge test costs $15.

  • Booking: You must book an appointment at an ICBC driver licensing office. While some offices allow walk-ins, they are increasingly rare in busy areas like North Vancouver or Burnaby, so booking online is highly recommended.

  • The "L" License Fee: Once you pass, there is a $17 fee for your first photo learner’s license (Class 7L).

Pro Tip: If you don't pass on your first try, don't sweat it. You can take the test again after waiting 7 days, though you will have to pay the $15 fee again.

Step Two: Booking Your Road Test

This is the big one. Once you’ve held your Learner’s license for the required period (usually 12 months), you’re eligible for the Class 7 road test.

H3: How to Book Effectively

The demand for road tests in the Lower Mainland remains high. You can book your test up to 6 months in advance via the ICBC online booking portal.

  • Check Often: Cancellations happen daily. If you’re looking for an earlier date, checking the portal early in the morning (around 8:00 AM) or late at night often reveals new openings.

  • Location Matters: You aren't restricted to your home city. If North Vancouver is fully booked, check the Burnaby (Lougheed) or Richmond locations. Just remember to practice in the area where you'll be tested!

H3: Current Road Test Fees

ICBC charges for the examiner's time. These fees must be paid at the time of your test:

  • Class 7 Road Test (to get your N): $35

  • Class 5 Road Test (to get your full license): $50

Success! Licensing and Renewal Fees

Once the examiner tells you those magic words—"You passed"—there are a few final costs to officially get your plastic card in the mail.

Service

Fee (Approx. 2026)

First Photo License (N or Full)

$17

5-Year License Renewal

$75

License Replacement (Lost or Stolen)

$17

Senior's License (65+) Renewal

$17

Note: If you are upgrading from an "N" to a "Full" license before your current card expires, the $17 fee usually covers the new card.

Digital Changes in 2026: Online Renewals

A major shift for 2026 is the expansion of ICBC’s digital services. For many drivers with a clean record, "simple renewals"—where you don't need a new photo—can now be completed through the ICBC digital portal. This is a huge time-saver, allowing you to bypass the lines at the licensing office.

However, if you have outstanding traffic fines, unpaid tolls, or required remedial programs, you will still need to visit an office in person to settle those before your license can be renewed.

Preparing for the "One-Shot" Success

Failing a road test doesn't just hurt your pride; it hits your wallet. Between the re-test fee ($35–$50) and the mandatory waiting periods (14 days for a first fail, up to 60 days for subsequent fails), the costs add up quickly.

This is where professional preparation pays off. At Actron Driving School, our instructors are experts in the specific routes and requirements of local ICBC offices. We don't just teach you how to drive; we teach you how to pass the test by eliminating the small errors that lead to costly demerits.
